Spicy Salsa
for Drowned Tortas


The drowned tortas are a typical dish from the state of Jalisco. It consists of a birote, that is a typical bread from Guadalajara with hard consistency and salty flavor, which is filled with the ingredients of your choice and then is dipped in a tomato salsa that is not spicy.

At this point the drowned torta is ready to be eaten however if you are brave you can order it with “chili”. This means that the famous spicy salsa for drowned tortas is added – and it really is very spicy because it is prepared with many arbol peppers.

About the Recipe

  • This salsa is very easy to make since you are only going to cook and blend.
  • In the preparation 12 arbol peppers are used, don’t reduce this quantity to make the salsa milder because it will lose its essence.
  • Use apple cider vinegar in the preparation and don’t substitute it for another vinegar because the flavors are not adequate for the salsa.
  • In less than the salsa will be ready.
  • The recipe is for 1 cup.


Ingredients

  • 12 Arbol Peppers (2.1 oz)
  • 1/4 of an Onion (1.2 oz)
  • 1 Garlic clove (.1 oz)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Oregano
  • 1/2 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar (4.2 fl oz)
  • 1/2 tablespoon of Salt

  • Cookware

  • 1 Saucepan
  • 1 Blender
  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Kitchen Spoon
  • 1 Strainer

  • Directions

    1. Put in a saucepan:
    • 12 Arbol Peppers.
    • 1/4 of an Onion.
    • 1 Garlic clove.
    • The enough Water to cover all the ingredients.


    1. Bring the saucepan water to a boil over high heat and leave the ingredients cooking for about 4 minutes, until the chilies soften.
    2. Transfer from the saucepan to a blender, with a kitchen spoon, all the ingredients that were cooked.
    3. Also add in the blender:
    • 1/2 teaspoon of Cumin.
    • 1/2 teaspoon of Oregano.
    • 1/2 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar.
    • 1/2 tablespoon of Salt.


    1. Blend very well the ingredients.
    2. Strain over a bowl the spicy salsa for drowned tortas.


    It is very important to strain the salsa so it has a soft texture.
